‘Syrian regime accused of chemical attack on Harasta,’ Al-Jazeera (Qatar), 11 April 2014

Almost eight months after the deadly chemical weapons attack perpetrated by the Syrian regime, which led to over 1000 deaths, activists are reporting another attack using poisonous gasses in the town of Harasta in the Rif Dimashq governorate. The August 21st, 2013 attack led the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to begin a program for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles, but regime forces have continued to strike opposition-held towns and cities hard with barrel bombs. The regime says it maintains its commitment to destroying its chemical weapons. Continue reading

New massacre of children in Raqqah

Raqqa Province – Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: The number of martyrs who have died following the military aircraft bombing of a secondary commercial school in the city of Raqqah has increased to twelve. Most of the martyrs are secondary school students, under the age of 18, and the number of martyrs is expected to rise because of the critical condition of some of those injured.

This targeted attack comes after the Syrian regime’s pledge to stop targeting schools and universities.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights condemns in the strongest terms the perpetration of this massacre of Syria’s children and students who are the promising future of Syria. We also renew our demands to refer the portfolio of war crime and crimes against humanities, perpetrated daily in Syria, to the International Criminal Court in order to apprehend the perpetrators and whoever gives them commands, and punish them for what has been perpetrated at their sinful hands against the Syrian people.

Regime forces control the strategic city of As-Safira

Aleppo Province

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) took control of the blockade of a brigade after violent clashes between the two sides and arrested seven members of the blockade. Meanwhile, ISIS fighters stormed the town of Hayyan and arrested members of another brigade in their home. There were also violent clashes between regime forces and combat brigades on the front lines in the main square and close to Nile Street. These were accompanied by shelling, by troupes against regime forces in the main square. There were reports of deaths and injuries on the side of the regime forces while brigades destroyed three regime tanks on the outskirts of Amriya, heading towards the town of Rasam Asan, as well as reports of deaths and injuries amongst regime forces. Kurdish fighters seize Syrian border post from armed opposition group

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Kurdish gunmen seized the Al-Yabiriyya border crossing, located on the Syrian border with Iraq, in the early hours of Saturday morning. The point was seized after three days of clashes with the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria, an armed group linked to Al-Qaeda.

The armed Islamist group had held the crossing from the Syrian army since last March.

The Observatory also said that 40 people were killed in a car bombing outside of a mosque in Wadi Barada in the province of Damascus yesterday.

The official Syrian Arabic news agency told outlets that “a number of terrorists” were killed after the explosion, and quoted an eyewitness as saying that the two entrances to the mosque collapsed in the blast, which occurred before Friday prayers finished.

There were conflicting reports about the death of a leader of Al-Nusra Front, when Syrian state television broadcast on Friday the news that Al-Nusra Front leader Abu Mohammed Joulani, who claimed responsibility for a number of suicide bombings, had been killed.

However, the opposition has denied his death.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Syrian armed opposition leadership believes that Joulani is “alive and in good health.”

The Observatory explained that prominent leaders of Al-Nusra Front denied to activists in Lattikia that they had received new about Joulani’s death, according to the Associated Press.

The Syrian Minster of Exterior, Walid al-Mo’alam  confirmed in a call with the United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki Moon that Damascus refuses any “partial report” issued by the UN General Secretary before completion of the international mission on the issue of chemical weapon functions. Damascus stands by results of expert analysis of the sample which was collected by the mission to investigate the  sites that exposed soldiers to poison gases, which the Syrian government requested General Security to investigate.
