In its struggle for self-determination and independence from Morocco, the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic in Western Sahara is finding support from Latin American countries, who see their shared history of European colonialism as reason to mobilize for the Saharawi people and their cause.

أكد ممثلون عن المجتمع المدني في دول أمريكا اللاتينية الجمعة في روما أن هذه الدول تجندت من أجل الدفاع عن القضية الصحراوية والتنديد بانتهاكات حقوق الانسان في الأراضي المحتلة في الصحراء الغربية
وقالت الأمينة العامة للجمعية المكسيكية للتضامن مع الجمهورية العربية الصحراوية الديمقراطية إليزابيث هارو التي جاءت للمشاركة في أشغال الدورة ال38 للجنة الاوروبية لتنسيق دعم الشعب الصحراوي قائلة “لايسعنا بعدما ذقنا بأنفسنا ويلات الاستعمار الا أن نتجند لصالح القضية الصحراوية و كفاح الشعب الصحراوي من أجل تقرير المصير وفق لما نصت عليه لوائح الامم المتحدة
وأضافت بأن تضامن المكسيك مع القضية الصحراوية ثابت بالرغم من تغير الحكومات مذكرة بأنه تم مؤخرا إنشاء مجموعة برلمانية لدعم الشعب الصحراوي لدى غرفة النواب المكسيكيين
وبخصوص الموقف الأمريكي إزاء القضية الصحراوية أوضحت أن الولايات المتحدة اعتمدت الغموض في “موقفها حتى لا تضر بمصالحها مع المغرب و اسبانيا وفرنسا
ومن جهتها جددت البرلمانية الارجنتينية غرازييلا إيتوراس دعم بلدها لكفاح الصحراويين من أجل استقلالهم ودعت مجموع البرلمانيين الى تشكيل مجموعات من أجل مساعدة هذه القضية العادلة
واعتبرت ان العديد من جمعيات الدعم للقضية الصحراوية تنشأ في بلدان أمريكا اللاتينية مثل كولمبيا
وأدانت البرلمانية بانتهاك حقوق الانسان في الأراضي المحتلة في الصحراء الغربية وأوصت بالعمل سريعا على وضع آلية لمراقبة حقوق الانسان في هذه المنطقة

Desperate struggle and growing support for the Saharawi cause in international forums

On Friday in Rome, civil society representatives from Latin American countries confirmed that these countries mobilized in defence of the Saharawi cause and condemn the human rights violations in the occupied lands of Western Sahara.
Elizabeth Harrow, the secretary general of the Mexican Association for Solidarity with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, who came to participate in the 38th session of the European Committee for the Coordination of Support for the Saharawi People, said “we cannot afford, having ourselves tasted the scourge of colonialism, to not mobilize in favour of the Saharawi cause and the struggle of the Saharawi people for self-determination according to the stipulations of the United Nations.”
She added that Mexico stands steadfastly in solidarity with the Saharawi cause, despite the change in governments, because of the recently created parliamentary group to support the Saharawi people in Mexican parliament.
With regard to the American stance towards the Saharawi cause, it is clear that the United States has adopted ambiguity in its stance “so as to not damage its interests with Morocco, Spain, and France.”
For her part, Argentinian MP Graziella Eitouras renewed her country’s support for the Saharawi people’s struggle for independence and called all parliamentarians to form groups to help this just cause.
Many support associations for the Saharawi cause have arisen in Latin American countries like Columbia.
The Argentinian MP denounced the human rights violations on the occupied lands in the Western Sahara and recommended to work quickly to develop a mechanism to monitor human rights in the region.
