The United States government has classified Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram as a terrorist organization. Boko Haram, which seeks to implement Shari’a law in northern Nigeria, has carried out attacks resulting in thousands of deaths in the country, and is allegedly tied to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
