‘Washington includes the group ‘al-Melthimun’ (the Masked Men) in terrorist organizations list’, Anba Info (Mauritania), 19th December 2013

The U.S. has included the militant group known as the Masked Battalion lead by Mokhtar Bilmokhtar in its list of terrorist organizations. The group split from AQIM in late 2012, but threatens to subvert all U.S. and Western interests in the Sahel.

واشنطن تدرج جماعة “الملثمون” فى منظمات الإرهاب

أنباء انفو- أعلنت وزارة الخارجية الأميركية إدراج جماعة “الملثمون” التابعة لتنظيم القاعدة في المغرب كمنظمة إرهابية أجنبية وتجميد كل ممتلكات المنظمة داخل الولايات المتحدة.

وقالت وزارة الخارجية إن كتيبة “الملثمون” هي في الأصل جزء من تنظيم القاعدة في بلاد المغرب الإسلامي وأصبحت منظمة مستقلة في أواخر عام 2012 تحت زعامة مختار بلمختار الذي انشق عن تنظيم القاعدة وهدد بمحاربة المصالح الغربية، كما أنشأ كتيبة “الموقعون بالدماء” وألحق بها أفضل مقاتلي المنظمة. وقد ادعت تلك الكتيبة مسؤوليتها عن الهجوم ضد منشأه الغاز بالقرب من عين أميناس بالجزائر في يناير 2013 التي أسفرت عن وفاة 38 مدنيا، بينهم ثلاثة من الأميركيين، بعد أن حاصرتها قوات الأمن الجزائرية لمدة أربعة أيام.

وأضاف بيان وزارة الخارجية أن كتيبة «الملثمون» تعاونت في مايو 2013 مع حركة الوحدة والجهاد في غرب أفريقيا لتنفيذ تفجيرين انتحاريين في النيجر، والذي أسفر عن مقتل 20 شخصا، وفي أغسطس \ 2013 أعلنت كتيبة «الملثمون» اندماجها مع حركة الوحدة والجهاد تحت اسم «المرابطون»، وتعد أكبر تهديد على المدى القريب لمصالح الولايات المتحدة والغرب في منطقة السهل. وأكد البيان أن جميع المتورطين في كتيبة “الموقعون بالدماء” أو جماعة “المرابطون” هم أعضاء في كتيبة “الملثمون” وبالتالي تنطبق عليهم كل التداعيات المرتبطة بإدراج كتيبة “الملثمون كجماعة إرهابية.

Anba Info – The American Foreign Minister announced the inclusion of the al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb affiliated ‘al-Melthimun’ (the masked men) Organization as a foreign terrorist organization and that it would be freezing the organization’s assets in the US.

The U.S. Foreign Minister said the Masked Battalion was originally a part of AQIM, but became an independent organization in late 2012 under the leadership of Mokhtar Bilmokhtar who split from al-Qaeda and threatened to fight against Western interests. Bilmokhtar also founded ‘al-Muwaq’aun bil-Dima’ (The Signatories with Blood) joined by the best AQIM fighters. This battalion was responsible for the attack on the gas plant near ‘Ain Aminas in Algeria in January 2013, which saw the deaths of 38 civilians, amongst them three Americans. After which they were besieged by Algerian security forces for four days.

The Foreign Minister’s statement added that the Masked Battalion cooperated with the Movement of Unity and Jihad in West Africa to carry out two suicide bombings in Niger, which killed more than 20 people in August 2013. The Masked Battalion announced it’s integration with the Movement of Unity and Jihad under the name ‘al-Muraabituun’ – the largest short-term threat to U.S. and Western interests in the Sahel. The statement confirmed that the all involved in Signatories with Blood and al-Muraabituun are members of the Masked Battalion, and therefore all consequences associated with the Masked Battalion as a terrorist organization apply to them.
