Four of the most important living languages were compared according to the number of words in each language mentioned in the most important resources and dictionaries available in each language.
1. Arabic: 12,302,912
The number of non-repeated Arabic words.
2. English: 600,000
The number of English words according to the largest available dictionaries.
3. French: 150,000
The number of French words according to the largest available dictionaries.
4. Russian: 130,000
The number of Russian words according to the largest available dictionaries.

Today is World Arabic Language Day and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stressed Arabic’s importance in cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. Next year, UNESCO will focus a number of projects on developing Arabic-language media.
Moroccan scholar Dr. Moha En-Naji has written a book examining issues surrounding the teaching and usage of Tamazight (any number of regional indigenous languages) in North Africa and the North African diaspora. Amazigh movements have put great pressure on governments in the Maghreb in the past decades to recognize Tamazight as a co-official language alongside Arabic.
