America warns its citizens of security threats in Saudi Arabia

12 February 2014

The US State Department warned American citizens and asked them to exercise caution when travelling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia because of security threats targeting American and Saudi interests.

The warning statement indicated the presence of security threats and the possibility of terrorist groups, some connected to al-Qaeda, targeting Western and Saudi interests.

US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki expected there to be a closed-door meeting held Tuesday afternoon between John Kerry and Saudi Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, focusing on consolations about the overall issues of the Middle East.

More details in the report of Radio Sawa’s correspondent in Washington, Samir Nader:

The issues include the Syrian crisis, the Middle East peace process and international talks with Iran. In an interview with journalist David Ignatius for the Washington Post last weekend, Kerry mentioned that it is not possible to settle the regional issues with Iran before the advancement of its talks with Western countries on its nuclear portfolio. In response to Ignatius stating that there is an indication of Saudi fears about the possibility a security agreement with Iran emerging, Kerry said King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud set a tight new security arrangement for the region in the Arab Peace Initiative which he raised in 2002. Kerry also said that the initiative calls for comprehensive peace and security among the region’s states.
