Hamas: Appointment of new a secretary general for elections committee is in violation of the Cairo Agreement

22 January 2014

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) expressed its disapproval of the decision of President Mahmoud Abbas to appoint Dr. Samih Shabib as secretary general for the central elections committee. Shabib will succeed Rami al-Hamd Allah, who currently works as Prime Minister in the Ramallah government.

In a press statement this evening, Hamas spokesman Dr. Sami Abu Zahri said: “Abbas’ decision expresses a departure from the Cairo Agreement, which stipulates the formation of an election committee by consensus.”

Hamas called for the decision to be reconsidered as a commitment to the reconciliation agreement and out of respect for the positive atmosphere and current endeavours being undertaken to implement the agreement.
