Chinese researchers: Khalil Gibran “champion of Arabic literature,” Shorouk News (Egypt), 27 November 2013

The University of Beijing hosted a seminar last month to mark the anniversary of Egyptian writer Khalil Gibran’s 130th birthday. In it, Chinese researches stated that Gibran is the top Arab writer, and most popular among Chinese readers. Gibran’s works were first translated into Mandarin in the 1930s.

باحثون صينيون: جبران خليل جبران منبر الأدب العربي

قال باحثون صينيون، إن الشاعر والفيلسوف اللبناني جبران خليل جبران، يعد منبر الأدب العربي، وأنه أكثر الأدباء العرب شهرة وشعبية لدى الصينيين؛ حيث يبرز شغف كبير بأعماله وسط المترجمين والقراء

جاء ذلك في ندوة علمية استضافتها جامعة بكين بالتعاون مع الأكاديمية الصينية للعلوم الاجتماعية والجمعية الصينية لدراسات الأدب العربي، بمناسبة الذكرى السنوية الـ130 لميلاد جبران، وشارك فيها العشرات من الأساتذة والطلاب المتخصصين في دراسة الأدب والفن العربيين

ويرجع تاريخ ترجمة أعمال جبران إلى اللغة الصينية إلى ما قبل أكثر من 80 عاما، أي في عام 1931 تحديدا، لكنه لم يصبح ذائع الصيت في الصين إلا بعد صدور ترجمة “النبي” التي أعدتها وترجمتها الأديبة الصينية بينغ شين، عندما جذبتها حكمته العجيبة التي تفوح بالنفحات الشرقية والأسلوب الشاعري الجذاب

واتفق الباحثون، أن أدب جبران خليل جبران أدبه يميل إلى تصوير الشعور والأحاسيس الإنسانية العامة التي ينفعل معها القراء وإلى جنوحه إلى الحكمة والتعابير الشعرية، بما يلائم أذواق الصينيين التي اكتسبوها من تراثهم الشعري والفلسفي العريق

من جانبه، أشار رئيس قسم اللغة والثقافة العربية بجامعة بكين، فو جي مين، إلى أن دراسات الأدب العربي في الصين لم تخرج من حالة الفتور والركود بعد، “لذا يحدونا الأمل في أن تساعد هذه الندوة التي تعد الأولى من نوعها في الصين حول دراسات جبران”، في إشعال حماسة القراء الصينيين لأعمال الأدباء العرب

وأوضح جي مين، أنه “من السهل تأليف كتاب ضخم حول قضايا الشرق الأوسط، لكن تأليف كتاب حول دراسات الأدب العربي مسألة ليست هينة وتتطلب جهدا شاقا

وفي كلمته خلال الندوة، نوه الأستاذ جونغ جي كون، الرئيس الشرفي لجمعية دراسات الأدب العربي، بأن “ما نستقيه من خلال دراسة أعمال جبران هو القيم الإنسانية العامة مثل الخير والحب والحرية والعدالة، والتي شجع عليها جبران في مؤلفاته كافة

Chinese researchers say that Lebanese poet and philosopher Khalil Gibran is the champion of Arabic literature, and the most famous and popular Arab writer for Chinese people. This highlights the great passion for his work from translators and readers.

This came in a scientific seminar hosted by the University of Beijing in cooperation with the Chinese Academy for Social Sciences and the Chinese Association for the Study of Arabic Literature on the 130th anniversary of Gibran’s birthday. Dozens of professors, students and experts of Arabic art and literature participated in the seminar.

This history of translations of Gibran’s work into Chinese goes back more than 80 years, to 1931 specifically. However he did not become popular in China until the release of a translation of “The Prophet,” prepared and translated by Chinese writer Ping Chen. Gibran then attracted strange wisdom that had an Eastern fragrance and attractive poetic style.

The researchers agreed that Khalil Gibran’s literature tends to portray the feeling and general human sensations that readers react with, as well as wisdom and poetic expressions that suit the taste of thee Chinese who acquire it from their deep poetic and philosophical heritage.

For his part, the head of the Department of Arabic Language and Culture at the University of Beijing, Fu Ji Min indicated that studies of Arabic literature in China did not leave a state of apathy and stagnation “so we hope that this seminar, the first of its kind in China about studying Gibran, will help to ignite the enthusiasm of Chinese readers for the works of Arab writers.”

Ji Min explained that “it is easy to author a large book about the issues of the Middle East, but authoring about about the study of Arabic literature is not a trivial task and calls for arduous effort.”

In his speech during the seminar, he praised professor Jung Ji Kun, honorary chair of the Association for the Study of Arabic Literature, for “what we draw from the study of Gibran’s work is universal human values like goodness, love, freedom and justice, and Gibran encouraged them in all of his writings.”
