Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that with the death of Nelson Mandela, the world lost one of its great moral leaders and statesmen.

In a statement, Harper said: “Despite his long years in captivity, Mr. Mandela left prison with a heart closed to calls for settling scores. Instead, he was full of eagerness for truth, reconciliation and mutual understanding between all peoples.” Harper also expressed his condolences to Mandela’s family and all the people of South Africa, saying that Canada, which granted Mandela honourary citizenship in 2001, is grieving this loss and shares with the entire world its sincere condolences.
